3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS. The socket configuration shall be similar to the design shown in figure 1. A drift (tang) slot shall penetrate the tapered bore. The material quality shall be sufficient to ensure product compliance with the requirements of this document.
3.1 Dimensions. The socket hole taper (A) and shank taper (B) shall be selected from the size codes listed in table I. The gage line diameter (D) and tang slot (E) shall comply with the taper dimensions specified in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B5.10, "Machine Tapers (Self Holding and Steep Taper Series)" (DoD adopted).
3.2 Length. Taper socket length (C) shall be as specified (see 7.3(c)).

3.3 Concentricity. For socket lengths up to 12 inches, the shank taper shall be concentric with the hole taper within a tolerance of 0.002 inch total indicator reading (TIR). For socket lengths greater than 12 inches, the shank taper shall be concentric with the hole taper within a tolerance of 0.004 inch TIR.
Both TIRs shall be projected 5 inches from the mouth of the socket.
3.4 Hardness. Unless otherwise specified in the contract (see 7.3(d)), socket hardness shall not be less than 30 on the Rockwell "C" scale when tested in accordance with the American Society for Testing
and Materials (ASTM) E 18, "Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness and Rockwell
Superficial Hardness of Metallic Materials" (DoD adopted).
3.5 Finish. The outside of the socket shall have a ground finish.
3.6 Marking. The socket shall be permanently marked with the manufacturer's name or with a corresponding trademark of such known character that the manufacture may be identified. The socket shall also be permanently marked with the ASME numbers (see table I) designating the socket hole and shank tapers.
